The Making of All In

EP Greenblatt describes the record’s jumping off point as “a mid-20th century  Americana kind of vibe.” From “a simmering pot” of possible tune choices, he and  VJE leader and drummer Josh Feldstein selected the record’s 10 programming choices. The resulting arrangements and compositions are fresh and yet comfortably familiar, like the VJE’s demeanor on stage. The maturity and thoughtful, tasteful passion for jazz of the VJE collective pours out of the speakers. Standout tracks include two Neal Hefti tunes: "Pensive Miss",  plucked by Feldstein from the Basie book and featuring alto saxophonist Tarantino; and "The Odd Couple Theme", given a rolling momentum by Blanck on tenor, Applewhite on trombone, and the rest of the septet. Greenblatt’s two contributions, the title track and "What I Meant to Say Was" provide a nice balance to the unexpected tracks "Ain’t That A Kick In The Head" and Toshiko Akiyoshi’s  mid-1970’s big band composition "Studio J", both selected by Feldstein as perfect choices for the band’s current spirit. Josh Feldstein attributes the success of the date to musical compatibility and personal relationships that made the recording session a frictionless family conversation as well as a celebration of jazz and music making. From relative obscurity as a gig band birthed in Danbury, CT to a chart topping, nationally acclaimed ensemble with a worldwide listening audience, the VJE has made a  mark. All In makes that mark even more indelible.
